Jane Avril, in a red cloak and a wide hat, bends over a freshly pulled print at the press of the lithographic printer Père Cotelle, who turns the wheel in the background among the stones of the Ancourt workshop. Toulouse-Lautrec designed the lithograph in 1893 as the cover of the first portfolio of L'Estampe originale, the album of original prints by contemporary artists that André Marty published in quarterly instalments; the title and date are lettered at the upper right. The quiet grey, pink and red and the frank record of the printing trade make it a tribute to the craft that made his posters. The impression reproduced belongs to the Petit Palais, Paris.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
