A dancer in a yellow dress twirls under the lettering "Pantomimes lumineuses, Théâtre optique de E. Reynaud, musique de Gaston Paulin", with a clown and a crowd of spectators below. Jules Chéret designed the poster in 1892 for Émile Reynaud's Théâtre Optique at the Musée Grévin waxworks, where Reynaud projected his hand-painted animated films, the first animated pictures ever shown to a paying public, three years before the Lumière cinématographe. The yellow dress, the blue ground and the red lettering are printed in his overlapping spatter by Chaix, Paris. The impression reproduced belongs to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
