The Virgin, in a red dress and blue mantle, feeds the Child, who turns his head to look out at the viewer while holding a goldfinch in his hand; two arched windows behind them open onto a mountain landscape. The small devotional picture was painted in Milan around 1490 and takes its name from the Litta family, from whom Tsar Alexander II bought it in 1865 for the Hermitage. A preparatory drawing of the Virgin's head in the Louvre is certainly Leonardo's, but the painting itself is argued over: the Hermitage holds to Leonardo, while many scholars give the execution to his Milanese pupil Boltraffio working from the master's design. The tenderness of the group and the Child's outward glance have made it one of the most loved of all Madonnas regardless.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
