A peasant woman carrying two pails on a yoke has been broken into cones, cylinders and faceted planes of grey, green, ochre and white, so that her body, the buckets and the village around her merge into one mechanical structure. The yoke runs diagonally across the top and the pails hang like metal drums. Malevich painted it in 1912, in his Cubo-Futurist phase, when he combined the faceting of French Cubism with the sense of movement of Italian Futurism and applied both to the subject of Russian rural labour. The subtitle, Dynamic Arrangement, points to that interest in motion. The painting was among the works Malevich left in Germany after his Berlin exhibition of 1927, and it came to The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1935.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
