A naked, muscular figure sits hunched on a dark rock, chin on his fist, staring straight out with eyes that shine white in the gloom; a dark wing hangs folded at his side and a faint blue flame flickers at the left. Almost everything else dissolves into black. Stuck painted it in 1890, in what is called his dark monumental period. Ferdinand I of Bulgaria bought it from the artist's Munich studio in 1891 for the royal collection in Sofia; it passed to the National Art Gallery and belongs to the National Gallery of Bulgaria.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Near-black with a ghostly pale figure and two burning eyes, this is a dramatic picture for a study, home library or dark-walled hallway. Pair it with Fuseli's The Nightmare at 24×36 in a black frame.
