A man with a green face and red beard stares out at us in the foreground; behind him a woman in a white dress with a dark belt, her face flushed red and her hair loose, stands beside a second man with lowered eyes, against a green wall smudged with red and blue. Munch first treated jealousy in the 1890s and painted it at least eleven times. This version, unsigned and dated to 1907 with a query, is thought to belong to the series he painted that year in Warnemünde, known as The Green Room for its green walls. It is in the Munch Museum, Oslo.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Acid green, red and white make a tense, psychological picture for a study, office or hallway rather than a bedroom. Pair it with Van Gogh's The Night Café, another clash of red and green, at 16×24 in a black frame.
