A young, muscular figure with a mass of dark hair sits hugging his knees, wedged between the top and bottom edges of the canvas, his lower body wrapped in deep blue. Around him a sunset burns violet and red, and the rocks and flowers at the right break into angular facets like a mosaic, made with strokes of a painting knife. Vrubel painted it in 1890 as his first large canvas after moving to Moscow, while illustrating Mikhail Lermontov's poem The Demon. It was harshly criticised at first. It is in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Violet, deep blue and copper in crystalline facets make a rich, brooding picture for a study, library or living room with dark walls. Pair it with Kramskoi's Christ in the Desert, another seated figure lost in thought, at 24×36 in a black frame.
