A child in a white smock sits on the floor stirring a bowl, the figure cut from flat paper shapes against a plain ground, under the lettering Kassama corn flour. The Beggarstaffs, William Nicholson and James Pryde, made the design in 1894 for the corn flour of J. & J. Colman, one of the few of their poster designs actually printed and posted; the flat silhouette and the empty ground anticipate the poster art of the next century. The impression reproduced is in the Library of Congress, Washington.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A white silhouette on a plain ground, horizontal and spare, for a kitchen, hallway or landing at 24×18 or 32×24 in thin black, no mat. It suits a white or cream wall and pairs with the Beggarstaffs' Hamlet.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
