Voters crowd the steps of a Missouri courthouse on election day, arguing, drinking cider, taking the oath and being canvassed by candidates, while a drunk is carried up to vote. Bingham, himself a Missouri politician, painted it as a good-humoured portrait of frontier democracy, and it was engraved and sold by subscription. This version is in the Saint Louis Art Museum.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A busy, humorous crowd scene for a study, office or library in a dark wood frame. It suits warm white or deep green walls and is a gift for a politician or civics teacher.
