Nicodemus and Saint John lower the dead Christ onto the stone of anointing, his hand brushing the slab, while the Virgin, Mary Magdalene and Mary of Clopas grieve behind them, the last with her arms thrown up. The corner of the stone juts toward the viewer, who stands in the tomb below, and the figures pile up diagonally toward her raised hands. Caravaggio painted the altarpiece between 1602 and 1604 for the Vittrice chapel in Santa Maria in Vallicella, the Oratorians' church in Rome; it was admired at once, copied by Rubens, Fragonard and Cézanne, and was the one picture of his that even his critics praised. Taken to Paris by Napoleon in 1797, it returned in 1817 and was placed in the Vatican, where it hangs in the Pinacoteca.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A dead body lowered onto a stone slab by mourners in red, green and white against black, a dramatic altarpiece for a study, library or hallway at 24×36 in black. Deep red, charcoal or olive walls suit the chiaroscuro; pair it with The Incredulity of Saint Thomas.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is The Entombment of Christ in the public domain?
Yes. Caravaggio (1571–1610) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Pinacoteca Vaticana.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was The Entombment of Christ painted, and in what medium?
The Entombment of Christ dates from 1603–1604 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 300 × 203 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For The Entombment of Christ we'd choose 24×36.
