The Virgin and Child sit at the centre of a whirling crowd of kings, shepherds and horsemen, with ruined arches and fighting riders in the distance and, at the far right, a young man looking out who is usually taken for Leonardo himself. The monks of San Donato a Scopeto commissioned the altarpiece in 1481; Leonardo left for Milan the following year and never finished it, and what survives is the underdrawing and brown underpainting, a composition sketched in charcoal, ink, watercolour and thin oil on a panel more than two metres square. It is the most ambitious work of his first Florentine period and the point where the quiet of Verrocchio's workshop gives way to the storm of figures that would fill his later drawings. The Uffizi returned it to view in 2017 after a six-year cleaning.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
