John the Baptist pours water over the head of Christ, who stands in the Jordan with hands joined, while two kneeling angels hold his robe at the left and the hands of God and the dove descend from above. The altarpiece was painted in Verrocchio's workshop in Florence around 1472 to 1475 for the monastery of San Salvi, and the young Leonardo, then an apprentice of about twenty, painted the angel in profile at the far left and probably the misty river landscape behind him; Vasari's story that Verrocchio put down his brush after seeing the angel is the most famous legend of the painter's youth. The two angels side by side, one in tempera and one in oil, show the new medium arriving in Florence. The panel has been in the Uffizi since 1914.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
