Two goldeneye ducks tumble over the waves at the moment they are hit, while far off a hunter in a boat fires, a flash and puff of smoke against the grey sea. The title is a hunter's term for bringing down a bird with each barrel of a double-barrelled gun. Homer painted it at Prouts Neck in 1909, a year before his death, and it is one of his last oils. It is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A bold, almost Japanese composition of two ducks over the waves, for a study, den or lodge in a dark wood frame. It suits charcoal, slate or white walls.
