A young woman with long auburn hair tied back with a ribbon sits in profile in a green chair, wearing a pale turquoise dress with a high lace collar and gold-trimmed sleeves. To the left, against a soft grey ground, a great cloud of imaginary flowers in violet, cobalt, white, green and coral spills across the sheet. Redon drew the pastel in 1910 as one of his commissioned portraits of women with flowers; the sitter was the niece of the Parisian collector Marcel Kapferer, who owned it until 1926. The Cleveland Museum of Art bought it that year, one of several Redons it acquired at the time.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Grey, turquoise and violet with bursts of cobalt make a calm, colourful portrait for a living room, bedroom or study. Hang it with Klimt's Portrait of Emilie Flöge at 24×18 in a dark wood frame.
