A terracotta vase painted with dark figures, like an ancient Greek pot, holds a fan of stylised flowers: a large tan bloom with a black centre, violet tulip-like buds, feathered leaves and seed pods, all outlined in dark blue. The background is a stippled field of ochre, cream and rust, closer to a textile than to a wall. Redon painted it in tempera on canvas between 1900 and 1910, the decade in which he gave up his black charcoal drawings for colour. It belonged to Lillie P. Bliss, and the Metropolitan Museum acquired it from the Museum of Modern Art in 1951.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
