A great spray of flowers in red, blue, white and green fills the left of the sheet, while at lower right the pale head of Ophelia floats in profile, tilted back with closed eyes and small flowers in her hair. The background is a soft mist of gold, pink and turquoise, with a brown cliff at right. Redon returned often to the drowned heroine of Hamlet between 1900 and 1908 and drew this pastel around 1905–8. The National Gallery in London notes that he had seen Millais's Ophelia on a visit to London in 1895, and that in 1888 he had watched his young friend Emile Hennequin drown.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Gold, turquoise and bright red flowers on a misty ground suit a living room, bedroom or landing with soft daylight. Hang it as a pair with Millais's Ophelia, which Redon saw in London, at 24×16 in a dark wood frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×16. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
