A swirl of dark brown smoke, foam-white light and green waves fills the left side, where a winged shape can just be made out, while at right a craggy blue island rises under an ultramarine sky and a small pale nude stands among red flowers at its foot. The subject comes from Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, in which Roger rescues Angelica from a sea monster. Redon worked it in pastel on paper, later mounted on canvas, around 1910. It came to the Museum of Modern Art in New York with the Lillie P. Bliss Collection, the 1934 bequest that became the core of the museum's holdings.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Ultramarine, deep brown and sea-green make a dramatic, moody picture for a study, living room or hallway. Pair it with Aivazovsky's The Ninth Wave at 24×36 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
