Four butterflies drift across a sheet washed in soft blue, grey and cream: a large orange-red one at the centre, a patterned yellow one above it, a pale blue one at upper right and a small brownish one at the top. A single pale yellow flower curls up from the bottom edge. Redon painted this small watercolour between 1910 and 1914 and signed it at lower right. The Petit Palais describes his late butterfly watercolours as full of joy and light, peopled by unreal flora and fauna. The collector Jacques-Michel Zoubaloff gave it to the museum in July 1916, the month Redon died.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 12×18. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
