A great stone windmill rises on the bank of the River Lek at Wijk bij Duurstede, its sails catching the light against a sky heavy with rain cloud, while three women walk the path below and a boat sits on the water. In the distance are the towers of Duurstede castle and the church of St John. Ruisdael painted it around 1668 to 1670, and although he hardly ever dated his later work, this is accepted as a picture of his full maturity: flat land, water and an enormous sky gathered into one upright form. Seymour Slive noted that the rigging of the sails and the pattern of the waves are correct to the smallest detail. It stayed in Dutch hands, came to Amsterdam with the bequest of the banker Adriaan van der Hoop in 1854 and has been on loan to the Rijksmuseum from the city since 1885, where it is among the most reproduced pictures in the building.
