The night sky over the Rhône at Arles, the Plough blazing above the town, gas lamps along the far bank throwing orange reflections down into the water and a couple strolling on the shore at the bottom edge. Van Gogh painted it in September 1888, a minute or two from the Yellow House he was renting, after months of writing to Theo and to Émile Bernard about the starry night he was determined to paint. Prussian blue, ultramarine and cobalt carry the sky and river; the stars are laid on like gems. It was shown at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1889, Theo pairing it with Irises. The more famous Starry Night at MoMA, painted the following June from the asylum at Saint-Rémy, is the turbulent sequel; this one is the calm original. It came to the Musée d'Orsay in 1975 as a gift from Mr and Mrs Robert Kahn-Sriber.
