A laughing, winged Cupid of about twelve, naked and holding two arrows, sprawls over a heap of objects that stand for every human pursuit: a violin and lute, armour, a crown and sceptre, a square and compasses, a pen and manuscript, a laurel and the sheet music of a madrigal. The Latin title, Love Conquers All, comes from Virgil's Eclogues. Caravaggio painted it in Rome in 1601 or 1602 for the Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani, who prized it above everything else he owned and kept it behind a curtain, to be shown last. The model is thought to be the same boy who posed for the Saint John the Baptist in the Capitoline museums, and the pose borrows from Michelangelo's Victory. The picture entered the Berlin collection with the Giustiniani purchase of 1815 and is in the Gemäldegalerie.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
