A carnival crowd of masks, clowns, bishops, soldiers and a marching band pours towards us beneath a red banner reading Vive la Sociale, filling the canvas edge to edge in red, yellow, green and pink. Almost lost in the middle, a small Christ with a yellow halo rides a donkey, ignored by all. Ensor painted it in 1888 on a single canvas more than four metres wide, nailing part of it to the wall as he worked. Rejected by Les XX, it was not exhibited until 1929, and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles bought it in 1987.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Crowded red, yellow and green energy suits a large living room, dining room or games room wall where people gather. Pair it with Repin's Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, another roaring crowd of faces, at 24×36 in a black frame.
