A carnival crowd of masks, clowns, bishops, soldiers and a marching band pours towards us beneath a red banner reading Vive la Sociale, filling the canvas edge to edge in red, yellow, green and pink. Almost lost in the middle, a small Christ with a yellow halo rides a donkey, ignored by all. Ensor painted it in 1888 on a single canvas more than four metres wide, nailing part of it to the wall as he worked. Rejected by Les XX, it was not exhibited until 1929, and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles bought it in 1987.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Crowded red, yellow and green energy suits a large living room, dining room or games room wall where people gather. Pair it with Repin's Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, another roaring crowd of faces, at 36×24 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
