From a grassy slope with three small trees, the view opens over a turquoise and green lake to a far blue shore of mountains, a row of white clouds reflected on the water and great flat clouds stacked in the sky above. The composition is built in horizontal bands and is close to symmetrical. Hodler painted it in 1905 at Chexbres, between Lausanne and Montreux, looking towards the Savoy Alps. According to Kunstmuseum Basel it is one of thirteen versions and variants of this view, a subject he first took up in 1895 for Geneva's Concours Calame. The museum bought it through its Birmann fund.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Turquoise water, pale blue sky and white clouds make a calm, airy view for a living room, bedroom or sunny landing. Pair it with Friedrich's The Watzmann at 16×24 in a dark wood frame.
