A dark green jug stands on a pale ledge holding red, pink and violet anemones, sprays of small white blossoms and a few yellow flowers, set against a warm ground of ochre and olive brushed with feathery strokes of grey-blue. The flowers are drawn crisply while the background stays loose and soft. Redon made this pastel between 1910 and 1912 and signed it at lower left. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, received it through the bequest of the collector John T. Spaulding. Flower pieces like this filled the last years of Redon's career, after decades spent working almost entirely in black and white.
