A woodcutter in a striped shirt and green trousers swings an axe high above his head, his body thrown into a long diagonal between bare red-brown trunks; behind him the snowy ground and pale sky are almost white, broken only by an odd grey-blue oval cloud. Hodler painted this version in 1910. The figure began with a 1908 commission from the Swiss National Bank for the new 50-franc note; in 1910 Hodler showed a larger-than-life painting of it, which was an immediate success and brought orders for replicas. The Musée d'Orsay bought this canvas at auction in 2005.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
