A woman with long flame-red hair bends over a man in dark clothes, her bare arms locked around him and her face pressed to his neck, while a shadow swells behind them on a ground of deep blue and violet. Munch painted six versions of the subject between 1893 and 1895; this unsigned 1895 canvas is one of three in the Munch Museum in Oslo. Munch said it showed nothing more than a woman kissing a man on the neck. The title Vampire came from his friend, the critic Stanisław Przybyszewski, and has stayed with it ever since.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Deep blue and violet with a blaze of red hair make a dark, intimate picture for a study, a library or a living room with charcoal or plum walls. Hang it beside Munch's Madonna at 16×24 in a black frame.
