Under a full moon rising over the sea, harvesters lie asleep in the open beside a thatched shelter and a great dark tree: an old man in a white headcloth, women cradling infants, men stretched out on the stubble. The scene is held in muted blues, greys and dull rose. This is a smaller replica of the huge painting Puvis showed at the Salon of 1867, now in Lille, which illustrates a line from Virgil's Aeneid about the hour when weary mortals first rest. Puvis considered that composition his favourite work. Theodore M. Davis bequeathed this version to the Metropolitan Museum in 1915.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Moonlit blues, grey-green and soft rose make a hushed, restful picture for a bedroom or a long wall above a bed or sofa. Hang it with Friedrich's Moonrise over the Sea at 24×36 in a dark wood frame.
