Joanna Hiffernan, the painter Alphonse Legros and an old sailor sit on the balcony of an inn above the Thames at Rotherhithe, with a forest of ship masts and rigging behind them. Whistler worked on it from 1860, when he was living among the docks and etching the river, and repainted Jo's face several times to make her less provocative. It is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A busy Thames riverside scene in browns and blues for a study, bar or hallway, framed in dark wood. It suits warm grey or deep green walls and pairs with Sargent's Street in Venice.
