The mistress of the house has fallen asleep at the table and everything is going wrong. Her husband flirts with a young woman who holds a glass of wine between his knees, modelled by Steen's own wife Margriet van Goyen; a dog eats the pie, a pig has run off with the tap of the leaking wine cask, a monkey plays with the clock, a child rifles the cupboard, and a nun's warning goes unheard. On the slate in the corner is the first half of a Dutch proverb, In weelde siet toe, beware in times of plenty, and from the ceiling hangs a basket holding a sword and a crutch, the consequences waiting to fall. Jan Steen painted this upside-down world in 1663, signing and dating it. Charles of Lorraine's collection brought it to Vienna, where the Kunsthistorisches Museum acquired it in 1780. It is the fullest of his comic sermons on the disorderly household.
