A boxer rests on his stool in the corner of the ring at the Philadelphia Arena while his seconds fan him with a towel, and a timekeeper sits at a table in the foreground with his back to us. Eakins went to professional fights in the late 1890s and asked every figure in the picture, including the fighter Billy Smith, to pose in the hall itself. The smoky gallery of spectators and posters rises behind the bright, bare figure in the ring. It is one of three boxing pictures from those years, and has been at the Philadelphia Museum of Art since 1929.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
