Louis Kenton, Eakins's brother-in-law, stands alone in a black suit with his hands in his pockets and his head bowed, against a plain ochre ground. The full-length figure with nothing around it recalls Velázquez, whom Eakins had studied in Madrid. It is one of his most admired late portraits and is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A tall, spare figure in black on ochre for a hallway, study or narrow wall, framed in black. It suits warm white, charcoal or deep green walls.
