A young woman in a pale satin dress and an embroidered shawl sprawls across a sofa, half asleep, the folds of silk filling most of the canvas. The model was Sargent's niece Rose-Marie Ormond, whom he painted many times in the years before the First World War; the French title means nonchalance. By 1911 Sargent had largely given up commissioned portraits and painted his family and friends for himself, and the freedom shows in the handling of the fabric. Rose-Marie was killed in 1918 when a German shell struck the church of Saint-Gervais in Paris during a Good Friday service. The painting is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A languid study in cream and gold for a bedroom or sitting room, above a sofa or bed in a dark wood frame. It glows against a warm white, olive or deep green wall and pairs with Sargent's Lady Agnew.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
