A man who has thrown aside his crutches lies against a boulder in the snow, praying before a crucifix sheltered by three fir trees, while the silhouette of a Gothic church rises out of the mist beyond, its spires echoing the shapes of the trees. Friedrich painted it, most probably in 1811, as the companion to a Winter Landscape of the same year now in Schwerin, in which a similar crippled figure wanders alone among dead oaks under a black sky. Where that picture is one of desolation, this one holds out the hope of resurrection through faith; shoots of grass push through the snow. Small as it is, the painting is one of the clearest statements of Friedrich's religious landscape. Rediscovered in Paris in 1982, it was bought by the National Gallery in London in 1987, the first Friedrich to enter a British public collection.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×12. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
