Fifteen sunflowers in a plain yellow jug against a yellow wall, painted in three shades of yellow and little else. Van Gogh made his first vase of sunflowers in Arles in August 1888 to decorate the room where Gauguin was to stay, meaning the pictures as a message of gratitude; Gauguin admired them and later asked for one. In January 1889, after Gauguin had left, he painted repetitions of two of the Arles canvases, and this is the January repetition of the fourth version. A strip of wood was added at the top, probably by Van Gogh himself. The painting never left the family: it passed to Theo, then to his widow and son, and is now on permanent loan from the Vincent van Gogh Foundation to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The sunflowers are the works he hoped would be remembered as entirely his own.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
