A farmer and a woman usually read as his daughter stand side by side in front of a white farmhouse whose upper window is a pointed Gothic arch, he holding a three-pronged hayfork, she glancing past him. Grant Wood saw the little Carpenter Gothic house in Eldon, Iowa, in 1930 and imagined the kind of people who might live in it; he posed his sister Nan Wood Graham and his dentist, Byron McKeeby, separately in his Cedar Rapids studio. The painting won a bronze medal at the Art Institute of Chicago's annual American exhibition that autumn and the museum bought it straight away. Its flat, polished finish owes a debt to the Flemish painters Wood had studied in Munich in 1928, and the fork's three tines are echoed in the stitching of the man's overalls and the window frames behind.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A crisp, high-contrast portrait in dark blue, brown and pale green that holds its own in a kitchen, hallway or study in a black frame. It pairs well with Homer's farm pictures or Eakins's portraits and suits a white, sage or cream wall.

Size. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
