A girl in a wide cream straw hat and a white lace dress, a long string of beads round her neck, turns her face from the light, half in shadow against a dark brown background. Benson painted one of his daughters in 1912 and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington bought it from him the same year. The strong side light and dark ground are closer to his indoor portraits than to his sunlit North Haven pictures, and the hat brim, lace and beads are painted with quick, sure strokes. With the rest of the Corcoran collection it passed to the National Gallery of Art in 2015.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A quiet, lamplit portrait in cream, umber and soft rose for a bedroom, dressing room or study in a dark wood frame. It pairs well with Sargent's portraits and suits a deep taupe or warm white wall.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
