Saskia van Uylenburgh, whom Rembrandt married in June 1634, stands in a shadowed grotto as Flora, the Roman goddess of spring. She wears a loose costume of silk and satin with silver embroidery, long hanging sleeves and a blue mantle, a pearl earring and a wreath of flowers that includes a streaked tulip, and she carries a staff twined with leaves and blossoms. The painting is signed and dated 1634, the year of their marriage, when the young artist was newly settled in Amsterdam and his reputation was rising fast. He painted Saskia in mythological guise more than once; a different Flora of 1635 is in London, and in 1654 he gave the role to Hendrickje Stoffels. Titian's Flora, then in a collection in Amsterdam, may have prompted the idea. The picture was bought for Catherine the Great and entered the Hermitage in St Petersburg before 1774.
