Samson sleeps in Delilah's lap, his dark head against her crimson skirt, while a young man snips his hair with crossed hands and an old woman holds a candle to light the work; in the doorway at the right Philistine soldiers wait with a torch, and in a niche behind stand Venus and a Cupid with his mouth bound. Rubens painted it around 1609 to 1610, just back from Italy and full of Caravaggio's lighting and Venetian colour, for his friend Nicolaas Rockox, burgomaster of Antwerp, to hang above the high mantelpiece of his house, which is why the scene is composed to be seen from below. Sold after Rockox's death in 1640, it reached the Liechtenstein collection around 1700, was catalogued there under an assistant's name, and vanished after a Paris sale in 1880 until Ludwig Burchard recognised it in 1929. The National Gallery in London bought it at Christie's in 1980; it is NG6461.
