Fashionably dressed couples lounge and flirt on the terrace of a garden before a grotto and a fountain of the Three Graces, while winged cupids push the shy toward the bold and a peacock, the bird of Juno, goddess of marriage, perches at the right. At the far left a gentleman escorts a woman in black into the party; he is generally taken to be Rubens himself, and the picture, painted around 1633, is read as a celebration of his second marriage to the young Helena Fourment. It is the grandest of all the merry-company pictures and the ancestor of the eighteenth-century fête galante. Philip IV of Spain acquired it, and in 1666 it was recorded hanging in the king's bedroom in the Royal Palace in Madrid, from which it passed to the Museo del Prado. Nearly three metres wide, it is one of the Prado's great Rubens canvases.
