It is the evening of 5 December, Sinterklaas, and a Dutch family is finding out who has been good. A little girl in a golden dress clutches a doll of John the Baptist and a bucket of sweets, refusing to share with her mother; her older brother, on the left, howls because his shoe held only a switch of twigs, while another brother laughs and holds the shoe up. By the fireplace children sing to the chimney, a grandmother in the background beckons the crying boy toward a hidden present, and a basket of cakes and waffles spills across the floor in the foreground. Jan Steen painted it around 1665 to 1668, and no other picture packs every custom of the feast into one room so completely. It is in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and it is still the image the Dutch reach for when the holiday comes round.
