The prophet Daniel stands calmly with his hands clasped in a stone pit while lions prowl around him in the blue-green gloom, lit by a shaft of light from a high window. Tanner's first version of the subject won an honourable mention at the Paris Salon of 1896; he returned to it years later, and this version is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
