Van Gogh sits in his studio in Arles in a fur-trimmed cap and green overcoat, his bandaged ear turned to the viewer, with an easel and a blank canvas at the left and a Japanese print of geishas and Mount Fuji on the wall behind him. He painted it in January 1889, a few weeks after cutting off part of his left ear on the night of 23 December, when Gauguin left the Yellow House; the mirror has reversed the wound. The firm, almost calm handling, the cold light of the window and the print, which he had bought in Paris, present a man returned to work. The painting belonged to the Courtauld collection from 1928 and hangs in The Courtauld in London.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
