A woman in a linen headdress and a blue dress with a black and gold bodice opens a casement with one hand and rests the other on a gilt silver pitcher standing in its basin, the morning light from the window catching every edge. On the table is a Turkish carpet, on the wall a map, on the chair a bundle of blue cloth. Vermeer painted it around 1662, part of a closely related group of quiet interiors from the early 1660s in which light alone organises the room; the blue cloth reflects on the side of the pitcher and the red carpet warms the underside of the basin. Henry Gurdon Marquand bought it in Paris in 1887 for 800 dollars and brought it to New York, making it the first Vermeer in an American collection, and gave it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art the following year.
