A young woman in a white dress leans on a mantelpiece holding a Japanese fan, her face seen again, wistful, in the mirror behind her, with blue-and-white porcelain and a spray of pink azalea at her side. The model was Joanna Hiffernan, Whistler's companion, and the picture is an early statement of his idea that a painting should be arranged like music, for colour and mood. The poet Swinburne wrote verses for it, which were pasted on the original frame. It was bequeathed to the national collection in 1919 and hangs at Tate Britain.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
