The Scottish historian Thomas Carlyle sits in profile in a long coat with his hat on his knee, against a grey wall hung with framed prints, in a pose deliberately close to Whistler's portrait of his mother. Carlyle, then in his late seventies, sat for it in Whistler's Chelsea studio in 1872–73. In 1891 the Corporation of Glasgow bought it, the first painting by Whistler to enter a public collection; it hangs in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A sombre profile in grey and black for a study, library or hallway, framed in black. It pairs with Whistler's Mother as a set and suits a grey, ivory or deep green wall.
