The surgeon Samuel D. Gross, scalpel in his bloodied hand, pauses to lecture to students in the operating theatre of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia while his assistants work on a patient's thigh and the patient's mother hides her face. Eakins painted it in 1875 for the Centennial Exhibition of 1876; the art jury found it too shocking and it was hung among the army medical displays instead. Jefferson's alumni bought it in 1878 for two hundred dollars. When the university sold it in 2006, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts bought it together to keep it in the city.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
