Samuel Pozzi, a Parisian surgeon and a founder of French gynaecology, stands full length in a scarlet dressing gown against a red curtain, his long fingers at his collar and waist. Sargent painted his friend in 1881, when Pozzi was thirty-four and already famous in Paris society, and showed it at the Royal Academy in London the next year. The almost monochrome red, broken only by the white of the shirt and the pale face, makes it one of his boldest portraits. It is in the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A full-length figure in blazing red for a study, hallway or dining room, framed in black. It needs a calm wall, white, charcoal or dark green, and works as a single statement piece.

Is Dr. Pozzi at Home in the public domain?
Yes. John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Hammer Museum.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Dr. Pozzi at Home painted, and in what medium?
Dr. Pozzi at Home dates from 1881 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 201.6 × 102.2 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair.
