A single fruit tree fills almost the whole square, its crown a shimmer of green, violet and blue dabs dotted with orange and yellow fruit, while white and pink roses climb along the bottom edge above a strip of bright green grass. Only a corner of sky shows at top right. Klimt painted it around 1905. France bought it in 1980 for what became the Musée d'Orsay; research later showed it was the painting Nora Stiasny, who was murdered in 1942, had been forced to sell in Vienna in 1938. In 2022 the French parliament passed a law to return it to her heirs.
