Slender trunks, blue-grey and mottled, rise in close ranks out of a floor of rust and copper leaves, with a single dark trunk on the right and only a few chinks of pale sky high in the canopy. Nothing leads the eye to a vanishing point; the leaf litter and spotted bark become one even pattern. Klimt painted it around 1902 during his summers at the Attersee, choosing the view through a cardboard viewfinder with a square opening that cut out sky and horizon. Dresden's state collections bought it in 1912 from the Great Art Exhibition held in the city, and it hangs in the Albertinum.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Rust and copper leaves under blue-grey trunks give a warm autumn picture for a study, reading corner or hallway on a cream or deep green wall. Pair it with Franz Marc's Deer in the Forest I, hung at 16×24 in a dark wood frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
